Week 2 Reflection

This week's material was all about being the change we want to see. Also, the fair distribution into the work force for social innovations companies/ideas, as not everyone that wants to change the world needs to create their own NGO or company to do so. You can add valuable contribution by working in companies and NGOs that already exist or even as a volunteer and donor. We need to think outside the box to find ways to make a positive impact in society.

Something of the material covered this week that got my attention was the Chapter 3 on our textbook. Being from Brazil myself it was very inspiring seeing Rosa's efforts to bring water and electricity to small farmers in Rio Grande do Sul. I had no idea of the effort needed to make this happen. Even with many setbacks Rosa made powerful allies and even with all the political power struggles he brought his project to life changing Palmares forever.

What connections do you see between Jeffrey Thompson’s article, The Gospel, and social innovation?

Everyone is important and all efforts matter. Sometimes we may feel that we should not go forward with a plan to benefit and change our surroundings positively but, we all have valuable contributions to give. Our unique perspectives can change the world.

Week 3 Reflection

Something that stuck with me for this week's material was the 5 whys. I had a really hard time completing this assignment even though I am deeply engaged with my social issue topic of body image. I understand the causes and the things behind them, but honestly, it is hard to put on paper and organize what causes what. I know many women suffer the consequences of an unachievable perfect body.  I look forward to finding organizations, social media, and people who are helping in the process of women to accept themselves more. I already follow some accounts their content has been so helpful to me, and I want to find out how I can help.

Week 5 Reflection

This week we learned how to evaluate the impact of social programs. When creating an organization to try to help with a social issue it is important to have a clear idea of what the issue is and what the goal the organization wants to achieve. By have a clear mission you also will find more people and companies that will want to invest their time and money in the cause too. A material that got my attention was the article "Getting Results: Outputs, Outcomes and Impact". In this article I learned that defining the results is also important so you know exactly what you are looking for. Our job is always look to cause a good impact in society, this means the results will be more long-lasting. The article "Starfish Hurling and Community Service" was pretty funny and educational. Usually we want to cause an impact in society but we forget to ask the right questions and understand if we are indeed helping or not. Maybe we feel the urge to help, but we do need to evaluat...

Week 4 Reflection

This week we learned about Design Thinking, a very important tool when we are talking about Social Innovation. Sometimes we may have a great cause, we are willing to work hard to fix an issue but have no idea from where to start. Design Thinking helps us to decide what is the best way to approach a project and look for the root of the issue.  Talking about Design Thinking, something that stood out to me what the 5 whys. The exercise we had to complete trying to find the root cause of the problem was way harder than I expected. I thought I knew what I was working with, I knew what bothered me about my social issue, but WHY did that happened was something I had to really think about. Our reading of chapter 9 also spoke deeply to me because I am very into mental health and social inclusion, since I have a family member who struggles with it.  Why is design thinking an important skill in social innovation? Design thinking gives us a way to work out big projects, it guides th...
