Week 4 Reflection

This week we learned about Design Thinking, a very important tool when we are talking about Social Innovation. Sometimes we may have a great cause, we are willing to work hard to fix an issue but have no idea from where to start. Design Thinking helps us to decide what is the best way to approach a project and look for the root of the issue.

Talking about Design Thinking, something that stood out to me what the 5 whys. The exercise we had to complete trying to find the root cause of the problem was way harder than I expected. I thought I knew what I was working with, I knew what bothered me about my social issue, but WHY did that happened was something I had to really think about. Our reading of chapter 9 also spoke deeply to me because I am very into mental health and social inclusion, since I have a family member who struggles with it.

  • Why is design thinking an important skill in social innovation?
Design thinking gives us a way to work out big projects, it guides the project in a way that you understand why the problem is happening and how to start working with it. Big problems need to be solved, and the strategies to organize a possible solution is design thinking.

Week 1 Reflection

The world is full of problems, and we know that we are aware. So many NGOs and actions have been created to change how things go and some minor changes sometimes get to the mainstream. But nothing will really change until money and profit is the main goal, and let's be honest they are the ultimate goal. Companies are created for profit and people want to have a comfortable life with luxuries whenever possible. I honestly do not see much change ahead even with all these social programs and nice initiatives.  The material this week was an overview of how social innovation is pursued and how it has become more socially accepted, even requested, that companies show social and environmental awareness and not only look for profit without giving something back to the community. Superficially it seems that society is more aware of its impacts on our world and society, but that is was I believe it is: superficial. I do not believe people (including myself) are really willing to change...

Week 3 Reflection

Something that stuck with me for this week's material was the 5 whys. I had a really hard time completing this assignment even though I am deeply engaged with my social issue topic of body image. I understand the causes and the things behind them, but honestly, it is hard to put on paper and organize what causes what. I know many women suffer the consequences of an unachievable perfect body.  I look forward to finding organizations, social media, and people who are helping in the process of women to accept themselves more. I already follow some accounts their content has been so helpful to me, and I want to find out how I can help.
