Week 2 Reflection

This week's material was all about being the change we want to see. Also, the fair distribution into the work force for social innovations companies/ideas, as not everyone that wants to change the world needs to create their own NGO or company to do so. You can add valuable contribution by working in companies and NGOs that already exist or even as a volunteer and donor. We need to think outside the box to find ways to make a positive impact in society.  Something of the material covered this week that got my attention was the Chapter 3 on our textbook. Being from Brazil myself it was very inspiring seeing Rosa's efforts to bring water and electricity to small farmers in Rio Grande do Sul. I had no idea of the effort needed to make this happen. Week 1 Reflection

 The world is full of problems, and we know that we are aware. So many NGOs and actions have been created to change how things go and some minor changes sometimes get to the mainstream. But nothing will really change until money and profit is the main goal, and let's be honest they are the ultimate goal. Companies are created for profit and people want to have a comfortable life with luxuries whenever possible. I honestly do not see much change ahead even with all these social programs and nice initiatives.  The material this week was an overview of how social innovation is pursued and how it has become more socially accepted, even requested, that companies show social and environmental awareness and not only look for profit without giving something back to the community. Superficially it seems that society is more aware of its impacts on our world and society, but that is was I believe it is: superficial. I do not believe people (including myself) are really willing to change...

Week 5 Reflection

This week we learned how to evaluate the impact of social programs. When creating an organization to try to help with a social issue it is important to have a clear idea of what the issue is and what the goal the organization wants to achieve. By have a clear mission you also will find more people and companies that will want to invest their time and money in the cause too. A material that got my attention was the article "Getting Results: Outputs, Outcomes and Impact". In this article I learned that defining the results is also important so you know exactly what you are looking for. Our job is always look to cause a good impact in society, this means the results will be more long-lasting. The article "Starfish Hurling and Community Service" was pretty funny and educational. Usually we want to cause an impact in society but we forget to ask the right questions and understand if we are indeed helping or not. Maybe we feel the urge to help, but we do need to evaluat...
